The Career of Joanne K. Rowling

At age 5 Rowling began telling numerous stories. After graduating from a University and studying French, she started a career as a bilingual secretary. At age of 26, she moved to Portugal to teach English, working and spending her mornings writing. After her divorce, Rowling and her daughter moved to Scotland where Rowling continued to write the first Harry Potter novel. With welfare income and a part time as a clerk, she returned to school to be certified to teach French in Scotland, and received a grant from the Scottish Arts Council to complete her novel. After numerous rejections, Rowling sold Harry Potter and Sorcerer’s Stone, and was published in the UK in 1997 and a year later in the USA. By 1999 Rowling had became a literary celebrity when the first three books in the Harry Potter series all appeared on the top three positions of the New York times best sellers list. By Summer 2000, the first three books had sold over 35 million copies in 35 languages and earned approximately $480 million. “ To her amazement, and joy, Ms. Rowling became a household name when the first three installments of the Harry Potter series took over the top 3 slots in the New York Times bestsellers
list” - Betty Jimenez. Because of her success on the New York Times bestseller list, the decision was made to introduce a bestseller list for children’s books, which would eliminate the dominating factor of these bestsellers on the current The New York Times bestseller list.
